
Apparantly flu virus detection and removal is similar to the problem of detecting and removing real (computer) viruses. They change all the time, and if you don't have the latest signature, then you aren't covered for the latest virus. Maybe the flu shot people let their subscription lapse. That was reported on the TV news a few days ago iirc, although they did say a strain "similar" to this year's the major flu was included. Yay :)
I don't believe this is a case of anyone being inept. From what I understand, figuring out which flu will be the serious one in any given year can be a matter of guess work, and as a result they can get it wrong.
