Look at Gentoo and Vector Linux. They may be too much work, you'll have to decide. But you will have a custom system, fully optimized with Gentoo.
I've tried Vector linux just to see how it was. It was pretty good and small. I could see that it was largely based on Slackware 9 though. -- The Toronto Linux Users Group.
