<http://gtalug.org/meeting/2018-02/> # Postgres, MVCC, and You (or, why COUNT(*) is slow) with David Wolever It's hard to be a developer today without using a database… but they're often surrounded by an air of reverent mystery. One of those mysteries is why it's so slow to count all the rows in a table using COUNT(*). After all, it's just a matter of walking a b-tree and counting leaves… and that should be trivial to optimize! In this talk I'll answer the question of "why COUNT(*) is slow" by taking a deep dive into the the internals of Postgres' MVCC implementation, looking at: The question of "why COUNT(*) is slow" The on-disk storage layout and why, under the hood, it's not a b-tree What Postgres means by MVCC, with examples of the utility of transactions Introduce xid, xmin, xmax Discuss tuple visibility Explain VACUUM and xid wraparound Show off transaction isolation levels This talk is accessible to anyone who's used an SQL database, with enough depth that experienced developers will find some interesting tidbits. About me: David is a Pythonista from Toronto, Canada. He's co-founder of both PyCon Canada – Canada's regional Python conference – and Akindi.com – a small company that's making multiple-choice bubble sheet tests a little bit less terrible. He's also the author of nose-parameterized, a parameterized testing for every Python testrunner, and pprint++, a Python pretty-printer that's actually pretty. If you would like to give a talk, all you have to do is write your name on a post-it and stick it on the whiteboard in the front of the room. Reminder: Board Elections Today

Today's meeting is special, it is the AGM. It's where members reaffirm their commitment to this community. Where volunteers step up to the board in order to guide month to month operations. Three of our five board seats will be open this year, for two year terms. Two of the incumbents, Myles Braithwaite, and Stewart Russell, have indicated that they will not be running for another term. We want to invite you as members to take a new, or even renewed, active role. Please consider running for the board, and keep in mind the following. The formal qualifications that must be satisfied: - Must be a member in good standing - Must not have any undischarged bankruptcy It is also important to be able to be available most months for Board/Operations meetings where we plan GTALUG meetings and activities. Upcoming Board Elections

It's coming the time of GTALUG's annual election, and we are seeking candidates to serve on the board of directors. GTALUG terms are two years, with elections so that in "even" years, two candidates are elected, and in "odd" years, there are three. This being 2017, an odd year, three seats need to be filled. Further, two of the incumbents, Myles Braithwaite, and Stewart Russell, have indicated that, due to changes in their personal responsibilities, they cannot run for another term. We are very thankful for all they have done in their years of support. This provides an opportunity for others to come in and help. There are formal qualifications that must be satisfied: - Must be a member in good standing - Must not have any undischarged bankruptcy It is also important to be able to be available most months for Board/Operations meetings where we plan GTALUG meetings and activities. We really do need to have board members that are involved, as that is how we are able to continue to plan the presentations that have occurred regularly since 1994. In addition, there are ongoing system adminstration responsibilities to manage our Internet infrastructure, mostly for managing web activity at http://gtalug.org and our mailing lists. If you are interested, we'd appreciate it very much if you can submit indication of your interest to board(a)gtalug.org -- Chris Browne When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"
